Summer Programs for Hungry Children (IFFS)
Next week as many of us go out of town for the 4th of July, we are offering the option to donate one of our Seasonal Food Boxes to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.
Schools are out, pools are open, parks beckon, and the living is easy… but not for everyone! Hunger doesn't take a break in the summer and North Carolina is the 10th hungriest state in the U.S. In the seven surrounding counties served by the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, 15% of the population (over 250,000 people) are food insecure and may not know where their next meal is coming from.
- Almost 1 in 4 children in North Carolina faces hunger on a regular basis (24.6%).
- Over 15% of our seven county service area faces food insecurity, that's over a quarter of a million people.
- Over 121,000 children applied to receive free or reduced lunch last year through our public schools in our seven service counties.
- Almost 32% of seniors in North Carolina live in or near poverty.
- Almost 604,000 North Carolina households don't have enough to eat.
To make a donation, please follow these instructions:
1) On your Papa Spud's orderpage, please select the featured item "Donate to IFFS Summer Programs". The cost of the donation is $25.00.
2) If you would like to add any items for yourself to the order, please add those items to your order as well. The donation box will be sent to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle for distribution, and any additional items in your order will be sent to your normal delivery address.
3) If you only wish to order a donation box, and do not wish to have any items delivered to you, please just remove any other items from your order. In this case, you will only be charged for the Donation Box ($15.00). The donation box will be sent to IFFS, and no delivery will be made to you.
The donation box will include a variety of produce items (cabbage, grape tomatoes, oranges, blueberries and sweet potatoes), as requested by the Interfaith Food Shuttle - the IFFS has indicated that this will be a great option for their programs, as we are in a unique position to offer such a well-rounded selection of healthy food items.
