Virginia Beauty Apples

Virginia Beauty Apples are an heirloom apple variety first cultivated 1810, in the backyard of Zach Saferight of Carrol County, Virginia! You won't find this type of heirloom apple variety in the grocery store, as distributors and shippers have shift toward modern apple varieties that look "prettier" and stand up to cross-country shipping better. However, there is nothing like the taste of and heirloom apple variety, which date back to a time when apples were bred for flavor over shippability! In 1914, F. H. LaBaume, a local Virginia fruit grower, sent a letter to the US Department of Agriculture, describing the Virginia Beauty as an apple with "a distinctive flavor all of its own that clings to the palate and lingers in the memory for a lifetime."

Virginia Beauties are attractive red apples, with a characteristic russeted bonnet. The flesh is tender and sweet, with mild acidity. A nice fresh eating apple, but also good in pies and desserts!
